SPS Member: 1999 to Present
Elected to Hall of Fame in 2022
Guenther Schubert was born and raised in West Germany and West Berlin and was educated there as a manufacturing engineer with a PhD in material sciences. He came to the United States with his wife and two daughters in 1991.
The fascination with photography began early in his life and took off in 1965 with the purchase of a 35mm rangefinder camera model LKE from Zeiss. A few years later in 1970, he acquired his first medium format TLR camera C220 from Mamiya. As years moved on, family and profession took the center stage in his life. However, photography moved to the forefront again after his two daughters left home for college. In 1999, Guenther joined the Springfield Photography Society after having been a member in the Pine Meadow Photographers Club in Windsor, CT for some time. A couple of years later, he traded the traditional B&W darkroom in his basement for the digital medium and never looked back.
After his retirement a few years ago, photography got a second wind. The additional time as a retiree has allowed Guenther to be more focused and explore various genres in depth including landscape, portrait and still life in both B&W and color. In addition, for many years, he has been collecting vintage 35mm camera lenses, the oldest in his “library” dating back to the birth of rangefinder and SLR cameras in the 1930s. Today’s camera technology allows him to use all those lenses on high-resolution, full-frame mirrorless cameras which unleash the full potential of the glass.
Guenther says, “What still fascinates me today, as during my first years in the 1960s, is the process of taking pictures. I also enjoy the digital editing process, which enables me to enhance pictures to new artistic levels unimaginable with film technology.”
Over the course of his 23 years in the Springfield Photographic Society, we have enjoyed a variety of contributions from Guenther. His engineering background and scientific curiosity have led him to a high level of understanding in the technical aspects of photography. Guenther has been someone we could always turn to and teach us more about these areas.
Guenther has served our club on the Board of Directors, is one of our most consistent field trip attendees and has been an active participant in our monthly exhibitions for years. We are pleased to welcome Guenther Schubert to the SPS Hall of Fame.
